Yeah the cop did swab the blood stain for DNA database entry.

I too was wondering why he didn't go for the back window. By the looks of the pry marks on the metal, near the edge of the glass, I think he was probably seeing if he could pop the glass off to be quieter. And after prying hard enough it just spidered out and then he pushed it in.
