| If you want to retain the factory radio, you need a device called a LOC (line output convertor), cheap ones are just that, cheap. Good ones are adjustable and cost more but do a far better job. The purpose of the LOC is to adapt the signal going from the factory radio to the factory speaker and change it into a signal that can be used at the new amplifier for the sub. In this case it attaches to the speaker wire output of the radio and converts the signal to a rca type line that then plugs into the new sub amplifier.
Some amplifiers come with this adaptor built in, consider this when looking for a amplifier. Down the road it would be ideal to replace the factory radio with a cd player that has a dedicated subwoofer rca type output on the back of it. This will increase the performance of the system yet again.
The amp will also have a crossover in it, this is to filter out unwanted signals and leave the sub producing bass only. It is called a low pass filter.
