The best midbass I have heard in-car is a tie for me. One was the B&W 7" driver out of a set of DM602 speakers. The other was the old RF Audiophile RFA64 6.5" midbass. I just scored a mint pair of these off ebay too.

Both of these drivers can play really low and IMO aren't too chesty like a woofer forced into midbass duty. Both setups I heard them in were 3way front end playing from about 50-250/300 ish.
