around the port is all you will need as the rest of the box can be any shape or form and there is no diff between them.The smothing is for port noise nothing more.Doing the rest of the box is pointless and is like doing so to a sealed box.Only exception is a TL box and from the design most of this is done before the end box.TL boxes are made to smooth the port and echo the port freq. making it louder.

Bose wave glide is a good example.3" speakers sound huge for the size of driver.
