hey guys,

my type-x finally arrived and it sounds awesome. I have heard mixed opinions about breaking in subs. I'm not sure whether to pound the sh1t out of it, or play it moderately over the next couple weeks.

Can I get some input on this?
1) should I drive the sub hard or play it lightly
2) how long is the 'break-in' period

thanks

sw

I have blown lots of subs in the past and I have realized that it is wise to run it low for a few weeks and let it break in. It will last longer and sound better as it breaks in.

so your subs wont take rated power in a box built to specs right out of the box from brand new??.....something wrong there then, might want to consider switching brands.

...or wait, were you maybe abusing the sub??

A sub does not get stronger as time goes on, what is there to break in?....sound MAY change over a break in period, but power handling does not, if it's going to blow on day one with (for example) 1000watts, then it's going to blow on day 30 with that same 1000watts

I agree. How could breaking in a sub change it's thermal or mechanical limits. The suspension may lose some stiffness but unless you abuse it it shouldn't blow.

awesome...i shall continue teh pounding ...

does mounting the amps on the side of the box create significant risk of damaging them? They are decent amps (KAC-X8100D, USAcoustics 4085)...but I hear vibrations do damage the legs of the resistors, transistors, etc...

I'm against mounting amps on the sub box, but many will argue that they've done without issues...just not worth risking shortening the life of the amp in my opinion, for the reasons you've stated

I haven't done any break in period on my last sub that was bnib

mounting amps to box isn't probably the smartest idea theoretically, but I haven't had any issues with my amps that I know of, related to stuff being broken inside.
also think about how much of vibration the amp gets while you are driving.
