Okay, so been doing some poking around and I was curious, whats the deal on th new shallow mount subs? Are they really any good? Other then giving you more space in your vehicle do they sound the same as a typical 12" sub? Do they weigh less overall? I currently have 2 12" Image Dynamics in my car and they are in sealed box and together they must weigh about 70-80lbs or so, I would like to lighten this up some so I was possibly heading to the shallow mount sub route to help with this, now the question is... would this help or jsut be a waste of time?

Some are not bad and can put down junk subs anyday
Sound the same as a normal 12" well yes and no
Weigh less Yes most do as the magnets are inside the coil on most

Chances are with them subs you would have a hard time finding something to compare to in a shallow mount.May have luck with the new RE SL subs they are not bad.

If you realy want to loose weigh then take a nice sub and get the motor replaced with NEO motors.TCsounds(now audiopulse) does this as a custom order and they are just as strong if not more then a regular motor.Good part is you can cut a 70lbs sub down to 20lbs with just a motor swap

going NEO motors on them ID`s I don`t think so the NEO`s will run you min.$250US each unless they changed the cost of them so thats $500 to put motors on then you need to recone them after that. You would be best to go with the REVO subs in Neo version. This would save cash as the parts for the sub will be down a bit and I know they work well together.Another good thing is the SQ and SPL will be way better with the audiopulse
Audiopulse » Subwoofer Drivers

There are others out there that do Neo subs like eD and others but it is not realy in the line up that they offer so it will be big $$$

Here is an auction for Neo Axis subs to get an idea
rare TC SOUNDS 3K / AUDIOPULSE AXIS W/ NEO MOTORS - eBay (item 280222423947 end time May-05-08 17:57:06 PDT)

Good luck getting TC to get on and do any conversions.. they are bankrupt. I seriously doubt they would make a custom neo magnet for a speaker that originates from a different brand manufacturer.

2nd, ED is not a build house, they have other build houses like TC make speakers for them (maybe just the parts and ED assembles them).

For the original poster, some shallow mounts are real light, such as the ED SQ10 or the tangband (forget model number) and they won't hit as hard as other beefier subs. Others such as the kicker shallow mounts will be heavier and be similar to regular sub in output.... however they aren't that shallow.

It really depends from what you have to what you are going to. Usually though, shallow mounts are made to fit in tiny boxes, there is always space and weight savings if you can go to a smaller box.

yes you are right TC was gobbled up they are now Audiopulse and are shipping drivers out now
Audiopulse » Welcome to Audiopulse
I have seen a number of eD in house made neo drivers ya they don`t make them they buy the parts. But you can find the subs floating around.
As for the rest you are right as well.
I figured from his post he was wanting to stay about the same in sound or better but go lighter.See one of them Audio pulse in neo build would be lighter and use less space(smaller box) plus out do his in both SQ and SPL this is whay I gave him the idea.Me my self am looking for Neo components in 5.25" size.

Audiopulse didn't buy TC sounds.
Audiopulse is to TC sounds what chevy is to General Motors.

Audiopulse was a brand created by TC sounds to be able to sell through retail chains like JL audio, eclipse and such. Infact they had started selling through partsexpress.com . They wanted to sell as high end. TC sounds created, owned and made speakers for the Audiopulse brand while still keeping their TC sounds build house name. TC sounds goes down, so does Audiopulse.

Now sound splinter on the other hand is a seperate compagny (like eclipse for example) that had TC build speakers for them and sold them under their SS name. Since TC doenst make speakers anymore, SS will soon shut down as well but they are not bankrupt and the owner has said we will not be looking at a new build house.

Now how can you still buy products? They (SS) have remaining stock that they will continu to sell off until none is left.

You will get your SS stuff no worries there.
