Tweeters popping/failing

Hi, I have a Kenwood Excelon KAC-X40 4 channel amp, which is running my two front JL TR650-CSi Component two-way speakers. The tweeters are popping at certain volume levels after a short period of time. The speakers are rated at 50RMS and the amp does 70 x 4.

The crossover is built in I believe. Crossover Networks - "Natural roll-off low pass (woofer), 1st order high-pass circuit with electrolytic capacitor on tweeter. Polyswitch tweeter protection." That's from the JL website.

The guys who installed it for me think that it's just getting too much power, as much as the woofer's are and that's why it's popping out.

Any suggestions?

The tweeters have an inline crossover that should be wired between the woofer and the tweeter. If you can, check and see if those were installed properly. Check your gain settings on your amp too. If you are clipping your signal they will definitely pop. Do you have/use loudness settings on your deck because that can clip your preouts if you crank your system.

loudness settings? You mean like adjusting the bass, treble, and mids via the deck? Yeah I use those.

What does "clipping your signal" mean?

Ok I just checked the connections and it looks like there are amp wires connected to the tweeters, and factory wires connected to the speakers. I'm positive of this. They are the same colored ones that are in the speaker slots on the amp, but they are going into the tweeter. Does this sound like they wired it wrong?

So I'm thinking that the tweeters are amped and the speakers are not? does that make any sense?

Clipping means that you are pushing your signal source too hard and it is producing too much distortion which can ruin your speakers. Loudness is a setting on your deck that elevates the signal during low volume listening. If you use it at high volumes you can cause too much distortion. If you had your bass/mid/treble cranked up it could also produce distorion.

As far as your speaker wiring goes it sounds like your tweeters are getting 70 watts apiece. There should be wires from your amp to the woofer and then wires from the woofer to the tweeter. There should be a little crossover wired inline between the speaker and the tweeter.

Here is a link to your manual to:

http://mobile.jlaudio.com/pdfs/2587.pdf

It should look like that picture.

Oh wow I just noticed the technicians left two sets of wires in a bag that came with the speakers. The wires are labelled TR050-CThp and has markings "to amplifier" and "to tweeter"

The manual calls them "In-line high pass filters"

Do I go back and make them install for free and try to get my money back??

Who did the install? I would go back and ask them to fix it. If not demand your money back. Do not take any of their crap, if they won't fix it, talk to the manager.

FUTURE SHOP. Yes I now I'm not supposed to go there, but it was such a simple job I didn't want to travel far. They also said they not seen a set of component speakers without crossovers, which explains why they didn't use the wires.

Thanks for your help scuba789. Could not have done this without your help.
