Need some help here guys, I think one of my nieces/nephews picked up a virus on my PC while using it. Symptoms are: Norton will not open any longer, MSN wont open, AVG wont open, and I can't view any webpages that deal with antivirus etc. etc....

No idea where to start, or if I should even bother trying...Any help would be much appreciated.

hopefully you have a spare computer?

Go onto nortons website with it and look through the current virus listing for a virus with symptoms that match yours. They will also give you a list of files to check to see if you have them (they contain the virus) as well as places to look in the register to confirm.. Down load the removal tool.

That works sometimes for me if the symptoms are not generic.

Thanks Chev, only problem is every time I download a virus program of any sort, I cannot open it. I tried downloading AVG, but can't open it etc...

I'll try your suggestion on the wifes laptop and see what happens. Thanks.

what about safe mode?

F8 at startup and log into Safe mode with network support (win2k and winxp)

See if you can download and run the virus removal program then.

If that don't work look for a Bootable virus scanner/cleaner

an example would be

boot into safe mode, if that doesnt work do a system roll back under start>all programs>accessories>system tools> system restore

select a bolded date and try to run your scans etc.

are you running windows Xp

Start up in safe mode.

Run msconfig,

Uncheck wierd stuff in the start up,

Run anti-virus.

Worked for me.

run windows restore if your version of windows has it... that feature is awsome !

otherwise backup and format is the only way to get your computer completely clean in my experience....

Well I tried all your advice, but nothing seems to help. The Virus shut my System Restore off and erased all the prior dates, and when I boot up into safe mode I still cannot use my antivirus, or view any webpages with antivirus information.

I looked into the bootable antivirus software, but it is $350 from that particular site. I tried to get a trial version, but I can't access my hotmail account to see if I recieved it or not...

Must have one of the better viruses out there, I'd sure like to get my hands on the jerks that have nothing better to do than create this crap...

I usually just back up, format, and start over but that’s because I’m good at killing windows (it only takes me about an hour to do that)

been killing windows since 95'
