So I have this "friend" who ordered a pile of computer parts from an online store. The shipment shows up minus the power supply which was back ordered. The credit card was charged for everything except the power supply. Then, a week later, a charge goes through for the power supply and the entire shipment shows up again.

Barring any moral or ethical issues...how long do you figure you would sit on this stuff before deciding that luck was on your side and the stuff is yours?

Till they ask for it back lol

If its a company I frequently bought from and trusted and didn't want to screw over however I would ship it back right away and say you sent the shipment twice, thanks anyways double of all would have been nice lol

See now...that would be the moral and ethical crap I was hoping to not involve. Aren't you in school for law or something like that? Any prof's that might know the legal side of this?

They could "ask" all they want, but I'm pretty sure they can't just go ahead and charge his card again or take any other action for their own negligence.

They could charge the card for the merchandise.
Just because they made they mistake and sent it doesn't mean it is his. They have the right to ask for it back and to get it back. They should of course pay for shipping and I would ask for something for my troubles.
Likely not what you wanted to hear right?

im a strong believer in karma, what goes around comes around, if that happend to me and i decided to keep the stuff instead of sending it back, im sure that power supply would malfunction and set my computer on fire. Everyone begins life with a dufflebag full of integrity. However much is left in that bag when you die is up to you.

Karma Schamrma.

Keeping it is wrong, plain and simple.

And the law seems like a convienent way to not have to deal with moral and ethical problems, which is a topic for another time.

I remember a few years back, Columbia House sent me a package containing a cd I ordered plus a cd that I didn't order. I meant to return it but totally forgot about it til I found it about a year later sitting in my closet. It always bugged me that someone else might have been charged for that cd, wish I had dealt with it asap.
