Has anyone ever put power steering fluid in their brake fluid by mistake?

What did you do to rectify the situation? There is a lot of conflicting info on the web regarding this. I will check with my mechanic but they do not open for a few more hours.

dude, bleed your brakes and get that shit out of your brake system NOW....

I had this happen to my car when I was 18 and it can cause the rubber seales through out your brake system to swell up.. you will loose your brakes... and it won't be cheap to fix either...

Have you driven the car and/or pumped the brakes (since adding the PS fluid)?

If not, get as much of the mix as you can out of the master cylinder before you do any bleeding. You'll be better off pulling the stuff out through the top of the system than flushing it all the way through. Once you've emptied the BF reservoir, refill it (with BF this time of course!) and bleed the whole system. Repeate at least once.

FWIW, if you can find a BF that's the same type (DOT4, DOT5 etc), but a different colour than your current fluid mix, it'll be easier to tell when you've got all of the old stuff out. A vacuum pump ( Vacuum Pump at CT ), if you've got one, would be just the ticket.

Haunz is right about the possible outcome - don't delay in getting something done about it.

Yeah, I'm gonna use a turkey baster to suck out the fluid. Then I am gonna pull the resevoir off the master cylinder and clean it with spray brake cleaner. Then re-install and pour in BF and limp it to the dealer for a flush.

I hope that does it!

Don't use the brake cleaner to clean it out, use brake fluid while the master cylinder is off, shake the crap out it, then repeat a few times...brake cleaner is harsh and most of them have chlorine in them, bad for rubber seals.

If the resivoir wasnt completly empty of brake fluid when you topped it up not much off the other fluid would of really got into the system you should be able to suck the fluid out and refil it and drive it to a shop for a flush. It takes about a day or two before it gets nasty and starts destroying seals and hoses.

If any of the p/s fluid reached any of the seals in the system, they will have to be replaced as the seals swell, and no amount of flushing will help

I am reading lots of conflicting info on the internet regarding this. Some are saying the car is FuXXed and all seals will have to be replaced. Others say if you are quick empty resevoir from the top and get a quick flush things will be OK. Do not know what to believe.

I called about 6 different shops to get reactions and they all said removing fluid from resevoir and flushing and then a complete system flush will be OK.

I was also told the seals in my master cylinder are metal (this is from a VW mechanid at the dealer)

Anyways, things seem good so far. I will monitor things closely and might take it in for a second flush in a day or two just for peace of mind.

the fluids was out of the resevoir this morning and the flush done this afternoon. I'll update in a few days
