| hey guys, i was thinking about building a new box for my 12w6, right now it is in a bandpass box and its kinda muddy and not loud enough. alot of people have told me if i want it to be louder and tighter bass, then ported is what i should get. but it has to be tuned right. which im not sure how to turn a box at all.
the box has to be 2.25 cubic feet (63.7L), according to the jl audio site http://mobile.jlaudio.com/pdfs/8-12W6_BDS.pdf
i want the back of the box to made from mdf so i can mount my amps to that and have them hidden, which is how they are mounted now. And im going to make the rest of the box out of plexiglass for a nice custom look. any help would be great guys thanks

| well someone on another site said that, that if i had a ported box tuned right, then it would be louder. But i dont even know what my box is tuned for right now (bandpass) because it came with the sub i bought it, is there any way i can check?
see heres my problem.. when the bass hits its jue like booooooooooom, its not really distinktive, just a muddy boom. Dont get me wrong it still sounds pretty good, but i would like to know if i could get more boooom booom, i have my bass boost completely off, and my input sensitivity, is at 2.5, which matchs the output voltage on my HU. And i also have the bass on the HU on 0. But when i play like rap the bass is mainly all boooooooooom, no like seperate beats, and when i play rock, there isnt like enough bass, so if i go to turn it up just a little bit, its all booooooom again :S it sounds kind of muddy which isnt what im going for. but man ill tell ya it will vibrate the hair on ur head with the bass now, i just wanna fix those little problems if there is a possible fix |

| You won't believe the difference in the sound when you put that sub in a ported box.....
Hope you don't get sticker shock when you get the plexi to build it tho, the price for that stuff seems to go through the roof when you start asking for thicker sheets.....

get some one to design you the box and tune it for you and it will make a huge change
bandpass boxs are " mono toned" they 9 times out of 10 they are centered at one tone and only play that single tone well the rest sound muddy
but that single tone with the right design is one of the loudest boxes but also the hardest to design properly SPL
as for a plain old ported box they play a shit load more freq and can get loud and are easyer to built and design and take up less room and can play lower SQL
as for a sealed box they play mid sub bass and higher most of the time and almost anyone can built one and design one and they let you over power your sub(s) with less chance of blowing it but most of the time they dont get very loud SQ
