I have aquired a new Infinity Kappa Perfect 10.1 sub.

I have never had a ported box before in any of my setups but I am toying with the idea of trying one.

Infinity recommends a 1 cubic foot vented box with a port 10.4" long and 3 inches in diameter. This tunes the box to 35Hz. How do you convert a round port to a slot port? Does shape make a difference in port noise? Are there any other general rules to consider regarding vented enclosure construction?

I have noticed by looking at the boxes and parameters page that the ported box is more efficient across the whole range but there is a huge increase in output at the tuning frequency whereas the sealed chart is more constant.

I listen to a pretty broad range of music ranging from rock, hip hop (those are the main 2) to acoustic and instrumental.

I am running 350ish watts rms to the sub via a Pheonix Gold Xenon X400.1 and my mids are Infinity Reference 6.5" components in front with matching coaxs in the rear. Those are powered by an alpine MRP-F450.

For my tastes should I try the ported or stick with sealed? I do really enjoy tight and clear bass. This one sub is replacing 2 Infinity Reference 1030Ws for the sake of trunk space and the fact that I don't really crank my music anymore except for the odd urge.

How can I tell whether this sub is naturally better suited to a vented or sealed enclosure?

Ahh that's the name given to the sub by the manufacturer guys.

Let me rephrase the question. I wan't to try a ported box, how do I properly design a ported box to lean towards SQ or is it even possible?

I have already upgraded all of my interior speakers and added a 4 channel amp to power them.

I know its not the best of stuff that I have but its better than noting and it sounds descent for what it is. I do not compete with this system, it is for me only and it is the best that I can afford with the tight budget I'm on. I am not trying to build a sq competitive system but my ears would rather hear cleaner output than louder volume. I am trying to make what I have sound the best and as well rounded that it can.

I have pretty much given up on the idea because I have zero experience with vented enclosures and a ton with sealed enclosures. I thought I would try something new to broaden my horizons is all.

I am by no means a pro, but I'm not a rookie either. I was asking for help before I waste time and materials (which I can't afford to do) trying something I've never done.

vented is easier then you think,
usually subs tolerate about 0.3 cuf above the reccomended factory spec.
they state that this includes the basket but i usually make my boxes about .1 to .2 cuf bigger then this rating.
the only thing you really need to be concerned about is tuning. port diameter and port lengeth determin which frequency your box will sound the best or loudest at.

All I know about ported box construction (or what I thought I knew) is that they can be a heck of a lot pickier than a sealed box in terms of design and that they can either "make or break" the sub. I'm trying to "make" it if I can.

I know I can build it properly, just don't know anything about designing it or if the box that the manufacturer specified is good for sq or not.
