Hello folks, It's my first time on this forum and wow there is some great people here.

This week I'm going to do my trunk install. The only thing that is bugging me right now is the box I will make for my subwoofer. First I planned to use a sealed box but I read on the AVI website :

"Today, this line is just as popular as when it was first sold, because they are still the most powerful and highest sound quality subs on the market. However, their intended use is strictly for ported enclosures or bandpass boxes."

Is it possible to get good sound quality out of a bandpass box?

Maybe....I've heard one really good BP setup and that was in a Kenwood demo van many years ago.....the boxes are so much more of a P.I.T.A. to design and build right, you're probably better off sticking to a ported box. IMHO, the extra 2 or 3 DB (over a narrow frequency range) you might get out of the BP aren't worth the hassle....

thanks for you comment BigRedGuy, but AVI are providing all the info to build a bandpass box so if I build it to the specs it should be okay?

Specs are:

1.7ft3 in the sealed portion and 1.3ft3 on the ported side.
Install woofer in the sealed side facing to the vented side.
2 Round ports of 4" diameter by 9.5in

That should be some nice thud. 3cuft bandpass..

Personally I like a bandpass box and would run one if they weren't so darned big.

Be careful what you wish for...

Maybe it's just me, but that's an interesting comment coming from the guy who's loading up a hearse with one of the largest ported boxes I've seen in years.....

Seriously tho, I would have thought the steep roll-off at the high end of the passband would have been an issue for you. I know it can be compensated for with a strong mid-bass setup up front, but it makes me wonder if you considered using a dual 8" BP box in your car when you started designing the system in your car.......

Just wondering.....

Absolutely without a doubt the biggest thing that people don't like about a system with a bandpass in it is that there is usually a huge disconnect between the bass and the midrange. Having a filtered upper end like that means you really need to pay attention to midbass.

I never considered a BP for my SX - I wanted too many drivers for that business. Maybe if I get tired of the wall in the Hearse I'll step to a casket style bandpass just for hellery..
