basically, i've got components in my rear deck (98 jetta) and would like to give them an enclosure. if i made one of just fiberglass would that be strong enough, and sound good resonance-wise? or should i make a frame (of sorts) with mdf first then use the glass. it will basically look like a cylinder extending from below the speaker.

any ideas?

MDF is strong enough by itself unless your looking for odd shaped enclosures I'd save yourself the time and effort and use MDF

i meant is fiberglass strong enough by itself. yeah - if i could use all mdf i would. don't think it's possible though.

If done properly it will be fine. If you do have any straight areas you can throw a piece of MDF in to make it part of the enclosure, so much the better.
