You could be safe with a flared port as you typically see an effective velocity of half that of a straight port, but more information would definitely be necessary. If the proper precautions aren't taken, you run into chuffing/noise and port compression.

its a 0.75 cube ft box with a 10" jl audio w0. i want to tune it to 36.5hz for that setup my culculation show that the minimum port diameter is 4". that port has to be 31.13" in langth which is way to long for my box, but if i use a 2" port the the langth has to be 7.01" so that would work.

ok man..ill let you in on this...wo series Jl are absolute bottom end and like 125 rms. Ive learned the hard way too, but you're going to be dispointed with this sub. Sealed they work great for a little punch, but ive read your posts and i think you are expecting too much from this little weeny sub even ported. Maybe you should buy a little higher end sub with more power handling and go sealed?

Listen to Legeia - a flared port is the only way to reduce port velocity at the outlet which will directly result in reduced vent noise. It still won't help with compression though.

I would use a 3" flared port as a minimum. Remember - the vent doesn't have to be inside the box. You could use a labrynth slot port as well.
