Well, first of all, Hello to everyone here.

I've just got a 1996 Mercury Cougar, and one of the first things i'm looking to do is upgrade my audio system.

The car currently has the stock audio system, and I really know nothing of these cars. I'm also not to keen on car audio.

Hopefully the members here will be able to provide some assistance.

First off, I'm looking for a head unit, It seems like a good place to start, But I'm not sure what I'm looking for.

What brands are good but won't cost an arm and a leg? I don't make much money and do support a family, so spending thousands on top end units isn't an option at this point.

What I do want is something that plays mp3's, has lots of power, features, RCA outputs, and subwoofer outputs.

I was looking at the Boss Audio 640UI, but have been told that boss audio is crap.... So basically what would be a good alternative to that particular head unit?

After the head unit, what would be my next step in upgrading my sound system?

I appreciate any help you could offer.
TIA

Personally, I'd recommend Alpine, they've always been the go-to brand for me from a sound quality stand point. Got to admit I REALLY like the new Pioneers, I've got my eye on the 4000 in-dash video unit that BB has on sale for $399 this week.

Well, my budget was around $150, but I'm highly considering doing something stupid and purchasing the Kenwood KDC-MP538U. Its $225 from crutchfield canada, and includes the tools, instructions and wiring harness needed to make the job super easy.

I don't need video.... at least not yet anyway
