Rewinding a Alternator is never a good way to go long term. Every Alternator is designed to give off a certain amount of heat, therefore every case is designed to disapate this certain amount of heat, if you rewind a Alternator to a larger capacity the heat will also go up with the current, now the case can no longer disapate this easy as well and it will eventually cook it self from the inside out. You are always better to find a larger alternator to fit your car then rewinding. Most good alternator shops have the capabilities to modify brackets for larger Alternators and it is not the much to have this done.

fair enough...

I have never had any problems with the one in my Impala though...
perhaps it is such a large case it didnt matter,

NB - I was running about 1400 class AB watts in my cutlass, and the stock alt was quite fine with that...
VERY minimal light dimming only at close-to-distorting volumes....
Its a case of see if you need it, THEN spend on it, I think.

You also said you replaced it with a different one, that is very different then taking the one from your car and rewinding it into a 220 amp.

ok ok

I MEANT, that I replaced my stock alt with a Rewound alt from a newer model car

Sorry if I was unclear.

Try to find the one you want, then shop it around, just like anything else.
