this is something that I have never ever really bin clarified on. Say I have 2 500 watt RMS subs and I want to get as much power to them as I can (500rms to each) do I need an amp that'll produce 1000rms? Same goes with 4 500rms subs, do I need a 2000rms amp to get the full 500rms to each sub.

you are correct just make sure that the ohm load of the subs together matches the amps power at 1000

it is all depends on that the coil configuration of the subs are and at what resistance (ohms) the amp will be stable down to

yeah, I'm familiar with ohm load and wiring multipule subs together and all that good stuff. I was just never 100% sure about how much power the subs would be getting.

that accually bring me to another question, is there a way to measure how many watts an amp is cranking out with a volt meter?

i dont really know how accurate it will be because you are basicly putting out a 100%clipped signal but when i tryed it with my amp (orion 8002) it said i was putting out just over 800watts which is what its suppoed to put out . and i bet if you were to use a true rms dmm is would give you differnt results than using a non rms meter
