if hooking up a amp to a home sterio would i be able to use a ac to dc power adapter 12 volt

Why not just buy an inexpensive home amp. There are lots on ebay. Old pioneers, etc.

In order to drive your car amp to any reasonable level you will need a very clean and heafty 120V to 12V converter. Good ones are not cheap.

this has only got 18amp capacity, hope you're not planning on running a huge amp to it...
