Most cars only come with a wimpy ground wire about 8 guage. This ground wire is fine to handle all of the car's electronic accessories, but when you start adding more stuff, it won't handle it as easily.

You may have the biggest wire from the battery positive to the amp. Equally huge wire from amp to chassis, but if you leave the factory stuff from the chassis to the battery it would be like your entire system was wired with that small stuff.

If you think of electricity in terms of high ways and traffic, you know what happens when you suddenly go from 8 lanes down to 4 - MAJOR conjestion. Keep the lanes wide the whole way through your system. The car's electrical system is a loop, and the final stage of the loop is from the chassis to the battery

I usually connect it to the original ground with a ring terminal (although finding 4 gauge ring terminals isn't easy around here ... Most audio shops around here don't even understand why you should upgrade the big 3)

If you are not picky about looks, you can use a welding lug ring instead of a fancy ring terminal. They can handle up to about 2 gauge wire. I crimped then soldered mine onto the wire and it seems to be working well.
