Myself, i run a 10" alpine type-r @ 500wrms in a sealed ~1ft^3 box. Its more then enough for my metal needs. What you should really be looking into is a strong midbass, as metal demands more of that vs the sub.

The bands i listen to for reference:
Amon amarth
kreator
king diamond
3 inches of blood
necrophagist
to name afew.
2nd that...metal requires excellent mid-bass!

Think of it this way... a normally tuned bass guitars low e note is equivalent to 40 hz.... an electric guitar at regular tuning is one octave higher at 80hz... whenever you go up an octave you double the frequency.... so in order to recreate a band you need be able to play all those frequencies... and 70-90hz is hard to get just right in a car with speaker in the doors and not in properly tuned chambers.

and how would one go about making tuned enclosures for each speaker (or group of speakers) in a car to obtain optimal performance of each speaker without making the doors or kicks really bulky and still be able have the mounting depth available for the speakers?

sound deaden your doors, seal them as much as you can, and mount your speakers on good solid baffles with a good seal between the front and rear of the speaker. Otherwise it requires custom work.
