the music I listen to is electronic,. hard trance, trance, breaks, drum n bass, jungle, etc...

Its many ranges of bass and fast speedy bass..

I listened to an SPL sub and the music didnt sound good on it..
I was wondering if I could get some insight on subs that will play electronic music loud clear and good and sound great..

and what kind of box, ported , sealed, and what to tune it at, etc...

so for those who like and listen to this music please let me know what set up works best...

I listen to a electronic, hard trance and drum n bass as well as other genres. My favourite sub set up so far for that type of music was two 10" Alpine Type X subs in a fairly small sealed box. The box was about 1.5 ft3 inside total before subtracting the sub's displacement, so about 1.2 ft3 or .6 ft3 per sub. I powered it with a 1500 watt sundown amp and it was awesome, super tight, really clean, hard hitting bass, and every note could be heard.

Pair of 10"s is a proper sealed enclosure should do the trick. Make sure your amp puts out nice clean power.

What you will need is like people said either a 10" or better quality 12-15" subs preferably sealed enclousers. Anything can be done with any size sub or enclosure depending on the quality of the component. If you go with a sealed enclosure you will need a slightly better amp, and if you want a really quick sub you will need to look for a sub with a larger magnet for better control of the motor and suspension. In essence look for a 12" SQ sub ie; soundsplinter, Mach5audio, CSS makes good subs also the latter are Canadian. You will enjoy the 12" subs more as they can play lower with less effort "as a general rule" not always then a 10" sub. There are so many products out there these days that you shouldn't have a hard time finding what you need. Be prepared to spend around $200 for a decnt 10" and around $200-$350 for a respectable 12", that's to your door. Gl with whatever you chose.

depending on your bass taste, and amount that you like. I've done a few systems with 8" subs, 2-4 of them, in sealed and ported boxes...main ingredient was plenty of power on tap for electronic music. Those beats are a killer to systems with very limited dynamic potential, and reserves. My friend's system consists of 4-MTX thunder 5508's in a 2 cube sealed box with a 1000 watt RF power 10000 amp. The beats are crazy clean, and sharp. System sounds good with all types of music but really excels at electronic.

what kind of a setup would be good for playing alot of metal?

sorry to jack a thread but i figured that as long as were going on about set-ups to match a musical style i mide as well post my question here :P

i imagine id need a sub with a larger magnet for optimum control of the voice coil to match all the fast and heavy kick drums.. but how about speakers and amps excetera?

to get a more practical response, what is your budget? what are your amp? and what are your size constraints?

my vote goes to idmax like always.
it isn't the greatest at anything, but it does everything very well. one of the best all round performers out there.

I would suggest something similar for metal. 10" sealed ~1ft^3 box.
Myself, I run a 10" Alpine type-R @ 500WRMS in a sealed ~1ft^3 box. Its more then enough for my metal needs. What you should really be looking into is a strong midbass, as metal demands more of that VS the sub.
