I noticed something interesting a few years back when the Focal 5WS was reviewed in CA&E (I think). The lads at Focal asked that two of the four drivers be mounted inverted to help cancel out non-linearities in the motor and suspension systems of the drivers.

This isn't a problem specific to the Focals, most drivers work better in one direction, as compared to the other, most often because they are assembled with the voice coil not centered electrically in the motor. Found it interesting..

Does that really matter if you only have one sub? </font>[/quote]Im gonna say it doesnt matter that much if your only running a single sub, especially if its a smaller sub. If I built a box for my TiPro with the plan to invert it then I could make the box 0.4 cubes smaller.

It wasn't the displacement that I was worried about. I wanted to know for when you have one sub installed invert mounted, will it affect woofer performance if the sub is wired normally rather than out of phase.

Normally, or out of phase depends not only on how the sub is mounted, but what direction it faces. You should always try wiring it both ways (if there is a single woofer) and just go with whichever blends better with the midbass...

I always ignore the electrical markings on all speakers and just do it acoustically.

I agree, I almost always switch the phase around with phase when tuning my system. I can usually notice a significant difference between normal and reverse phase, both on full range and sub-bass woofers. In my environment, reverse phase seems to sound better for sub-bass.

I'm with Dave and Mr Lemon on this 1. I was playing with my system this year and moved the Sub yia head unit to reverse polarity ( still in the traditional direction). I personaly feel it just sounds a little deaper/ throater. My single 10 runs like a charm and sounds great! [img]graemlins/jawdrop.gif[/img]
