I just threw an old amp of mine in my daily driver and I now have a couple of options for what sub to use. The amp is a Sony Xplod (340 x 1 @ 4ohm). A couple guys I know have a used 10 inch sub and box for sale and I can't decide which one to buy. One is an Alpine Type S in a sealed box and the other is a Sony Xplod (330W RMS version) in a Xplod ported box. Both are 75 bucks and are in good condition. I don't know a lot about car audio and need advice on which to buy, I was personally thinking the Sony because of the amp and since it has a ported box made specificly for it. I know way more people prefer Alpine, but biases aside, which would be a better choice for me? Thanks.

If they are both in there own enclosures why not just throw them in your ride and test them out? The one you should buy is the one you like the the sound of the most. If they won't let you try them out then they are probably not worth buying anyway. Just my $.02

agreed.

but with no test I'd pick the sony, I'm not a huge fan of either but have had both, despite how much people like to bash Sony subs, I actually liked the sound of the one i had for a bit, the type S however i couldnt get to sound good at all.

Well the guy let me stick the Xplod in today and it sounds awesome. It thumped as hard as his Type R in a sealed box. I still want to try the type S but my buddy is reluctant to have to go get the thing from his parents house unless i'll commit to buying it. The thing that stopped me from buying the Xplod is that I don't know the guy to well and he was really pushing me to buy it. My buddy would give me my money back no questions asked if anything happened to the Type S. I couldn't get screwed by purchasing the Type S but I might be looking for a sub again in the near future. It's a tough call, tested and true but from a questionable source or sight unseen from a good buddy... I wish I had the cash to buy something new.

Well good things do come to those who wait. I saw a private add today for a guy selling a 10" Pioneer Premier Champion that was BNIB. He wanted 80 bucks and said he'd throw in a free box. I went to check it out and the box was a homemade 1 cubic foot sealed box that looked more professional than any store bought box I've ever seen. He even sanded the inside glass smooth. I swear he could sell the box for 150 bucks. The guy even had the receipt showing he bought the sub on sale for 109 but never had a use for it. Life is so much easier when your presented with such obvious choices

Time to go hook this baby up.
