Hey folks,

The 12W6v2 I am looking to buy has some white powdery mineral deposits on the magnet only. It doesn’t really rub off using my hand.

What could cause this? One theory that has been purposed is that since the sub is in a ported box, it is condensation from the winter air? I thought condensation occurred when the surrounding air is humid and comes into contact with a cold surface, thus “condensing” the water molecules into liquid again. Maybe it occurred from humid summer air coming into contact with a cold magnet.

Anyways, has anyone seen this b4? Should I be concerned about this affecting the sub in any way? Or be concerned that it was in an environment that caused this in the first place?

what you have is a case of currosion not a big deal try an anti oxydent on it and seal it with some wax or something

It will not affect performance. It's just a bit of corrosion. Try to get a bit of a discount though because of the blemish.

speaking of witch. can corrosion sneak up the vented pole peice and head straight for the voice coil ?

^ yes it can.. I've seen it... however, this isn't corrosion... (how is a stainless steel backplate going to corrode ?)

what you see is a result of SO3 and other nasty stuff dissolved in the airs mosture, which has condensed on the sub, and re-evaporated leaving these depos****...

If the cone still moves freely, you are probably OK...

FYI humidity is relative.. you don't need alot of mosture in the air to produced condensation.. only cool temperatures... ect...

^ Stainless steel will corrode in the presence of chlorides and other "ides" as well as many sulphur compounds and such.

So the S03 - Sulphur Trioxide - would definitely stain it [img]graemlins/thumb.gif[/img]

In this case the metal has been oxidized by sulfuric acid.. (SO3 in water)

Id call my local coal firing power plant and bitch just to see what they say... threaten civil action if they don't replace your sub.. [img]graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

yea, I just didnt want anyone to think rust... I figured the next question would be how the heck a copper wire VC could rust...

Guess I didn't save any confusion... lol..

So, its corrosion, and yes, it can damage the inside of the motor.. !

(although itd probably have to be an extreme case to do damage- I've it happen to prosound drivers)
