The only things I have read about people plugging hard drives to their head unit is startup times are really slow, and you could be waiting minutes for the music to start, if it does work at all.

I have been down this route, and I didn't want to go to the ipod, but sadly it was the only solution. Now that I have gone with it, I have to say it works perfectly, and I am very happy I have gone this route.

If you want the hard drive route, I would suggest a carputer setup. Then the sky is the limit.

I would not use the external hard drive powered only by the USB cable. It may be really hard on the head unit. Just get yourself a small power inverter that plugs into the cigarette lighter socket and then plug the hard drives power adapter into the inverter and you are good to go. I have done this and it works good with no issues.
