I'd be buyin a motion light for your driveway, 'cause they'll be bored and looking for revenge in a day or two.
| Yep, they're gonna be lookin' for revenge for sure. They KNOW you called the cops, and they KNOW you trailed them for a bit, and they DID get wrist-slapped by the cops.
So now, well... find a garage or something man...

| I had a similar deal in Winnipeg several years ago..
My Celica got broke into like 5 times in month...
The last time,I left my doors unlocked so they wouldnt break anymore windows.About 12ish at night I'm sitting in my roomies room just vegging and I hear the alarm go off..I look outside and here's dude still holding the door looking in the car.I run outside barefoot and find hiim starting to walk down the street.I chase after him, getting him stopped and ask him what the hell he thought he was doing. His reasoning was he thought it was his buddies car.BS!I run back to the house and grab a cell phone and call the non-emerg line.By the time I got back out he was gone down the street.I hop in the car, drive down about 3/4 block and there's dude...while I'm still on the phone with the cops.I pull over next to him and as I do a cruiser rolls by.I start honking the horn, flashing lights, and whatever I could do to get their attention. They come over, take the guy aside for about 30 secs and he walks away.WTF!!!They come over to me and say "if you had caught him inside the car we could do something"..WHAT!?!?!
I moved out of that neighborhood very soon afterward.
I now have a policy:
If I catch you even touching my car without my permission, you better have one of three things:
1:The ability to run faster than a world class sprinter
2:One hell of a health plan
3:911 on your cell phone speed dial
I keep a baseball bat by my front door at all times....

| My roomate and I have 2 baseball bats behind our door for when (not if in Edmonton) this happens. He has a preference for wood, while I like aluminuim.
I totally understand your frustration that nothing happens anyways. |

| No stereo system is worth shooting and killing a person.

| Hey guys, just thought I"d throw my two cents in here. I guess I"m fortunate enough to not have my car broken into, but I used to take my car to school all the time. A friend of mine had a spare and would sometimes go out to his truck to have a smoke or something and often noticed kids looking into my windows.
Another time I was at the mall one day and I came out and there were two guys that looked like they were going to break in (fit the racial profile as well) but when I got to the car they just backed off and said "can we hear your stereo?"
It's hard to "know" if they are really breaking in or if they are just looking until they actually try to break in ie. break a window. The guy that lifted the door handles, you could argue was looking to break in, but testing to see if there was an alarm, however like the cops said, he didn't really do anything that they could charge him with.
If you guys want to keep bats by your doors, that's fine, but make sure you think twice about actually using it on a "peeper" because you could be the one that gets charged. Keep in mind that most people that do B & E's are there for your equiptment, not to harm anybody so the chances of using a baseball bat as "self defence" is probably slim to none.

| Nothing oozes satisfaction like a hollow tip Louiseville Slugger.
When the statements are being taken there will be only one side of the story.

Im gonna pull my gear out tonight when i get home, its a bit of a pain,, but what insurance would allow for it doesn't equal what its worth to me..
I got a more non threating stick by my door,, its my landlords hickory cane..

And if the thief doesn't have a gun or makes no attempt to use/show it and you shoot at him just because your car alarm is going off you get charged with attempted murder.
So what exactly is your point?
As for the police officers in that situation their hands are tied and yuo were correct to handle it the way you did.
Frustrating I know but just be happy the car is without theft or damage and call it a day. | Yeah, because criminals don't already have guns.
Belleville is a small enough town that I imagine that you and a few friends could find them and set it straight. </font>[/quote]Belleville may be small to some but its not THAT small man. After awhile you get to know who the theifs are because in most cases everyone knows everyone somewhere down the line.
Rodney that sucks but at least there was no damage man. BS I know but still. This just makes me wanna get my alarm faster. One job I park where the lot is fully video surveilled. And my other job I park right outside of drive thru which is constantly busy, so if anyone tries something whoever is at that window see's. Which viper alarm do u have ?

Anyway, I think that if a person is dumb enough to come onto YOUR property, and break into YOUR car, and try to steal YOUR equipment, I dont think he will be running to the cops too quickly if you give him a good ass kicking.
Of course if you take it too far and actually do some major damage to him, that may be a little different. But even then, the judge would likely take your side of the story since the theif could possibly attack you if he knows hes been caught.

| Here's another story for you.. my cousins boyfriend who is about 6'6 and 230lbs (they live in Saskatoon) got his head unit ripped off one night, he was pissed off, but makes a lot of money so he replaced it. About a week later he went out to get some tools from his truck and came across this guy jacking his deck again so he chased him down and beat the piss out of him, blood everywhere...
When the cops came, they asked him why the guy was bleeding and all he said was that was how he found the guy.. the cops never mentioned anything again.
So I guess if you're lucky you can do whatever you want to the guy and get away with it.
