At what point do bass frequencies become omnidirectional?

Its not the sound that becomes omni, sound waves are very directional, and linear.
It's your ears and brain that can't tell which direction bass is coming from.
Varies from person to person, and can be trained. Average is about 100 Hz.

with the right x-over settings, and the right equipment it's hard to detect bass up to about 250 hz...

Thanks. I have a second question.

Basically my theory is to use the front speakers and the rear 8's as a giant 3 way system. The 8's would crossed at a low enough point as not to pull the soundstage backwards.

Do you think this idea would work in tandem with subs, or would it be too complex? I'm thinking if done right, I'd have a good sounding system with an easier install than most 3 way component systems.

Only way is to try it out and listen. I have had a tough time keeping frequencies above 75Hz up front until I installed dedicated mid-bass. But, like it was noted above, if you can tune it properley you might fool your ears into thinking the sound from the eights is not coming from behind you. I would see about mounting them in the doors first...

no amount of opinions are a good substitute to real world testing...

Thanks guys. This is something I plan on doing later down the road. I don't have enough money to try out an active 3 way install. But I plan on trying it out later in the future for sure.
