Hi, I have just recently added a buttload of equipment to my car. And, as good as it sounds, I have one complaint, the mid to low end of sound. My system as it stands is this.



Pioneer DEH-8600MP
Focal 130KP (cause my acura cannot hold the 6.5's)
PG Ti 500.4 (2 channel bridge to sub, 1 channel @75W each to front)
JL 8W7-3 w/ Prowedge
Car doors and trunk damped


When I listen to music, the focals sound terrific in the mid section, however as it gets lower, the sub starts to kick in. I know I could set the crossover on the sub lower, but I would love to have a nice rich mid bass sound instead of puttin all the load on my 130kp's. Bear in mind, I realize I will have to get another amp if I were to get rear staging. I prefer sound quality over anything, so if someone could point me in the direction of a nice set of mid-bass drivers and even throw in a suggestion for an amp, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

are you looking for a particular sound or quality of sound, or looking for more output?

Not necessarily looking for more output. I would much prefer just a smooth mid to low end. My 8W7 seems to be covering to great a range, and I would like to relieve the load on my 130KP at the lower end, thus more staging and mid bass drivers. I was thinking maybe a Utopia midbass driver. I hear they are excellent quality

I believe it is the set up of the car. Try phase, placing the sub out of phase (also check the mids phasing). Also try different x-over points. Your set-up should perform pretty well. Maybe try an eq, rather than more speakers etc. More speaker also means you need another amp etc...

I had the same problem and I spent years and a crapload of $$ to get proper midbass in my system. Eventually I added dedicated midbass speakers which sounded GREAT, so great that I went without a sub for a while. In the end, I needed the bass back and put in the sub and removed the midbass speakers. I found that a proper crossover point combined with the right phase gives the midbass I need without needing a midbass driver and without putting too much bass load on my front speakers.

Your current set up should give you what you need. What amps are you using and can you make sure your signals to the fronts and subs are crossing over at the same points?

If you do go with midbass, I had the Diamond Audio Hex 6.5 - nice, rich sound and can handle 150RMS - 300max. I would suggets you mount them in the front though...

I agree with Westec...I would try and solve phase and x-over issues before creating a ton of work with a three way system!

We had no major issues installing a 6.75" midbass driver in a 03 RSX. Are you sure you can't install the same size driver?

For the rear I am sure that is feasible. But the gentlemen at my local audio shop said without kickpanels, or a facelift to the door. It would look bad if 6.5's were installed. Thus the change to the 5.25. I agree with him too. The door doesn't look like it can hold bigger than 5.25 without looking awful.
