I have listened to Phil's Mercedes about a month ago...... The system consist of a Denon Z-1 HU and Focal Be speakers.
Listening to the Focal #6 CD...... (from the driver's seat) the system sounds very detail, delicate and stable.
-Trk#1 (One evening) - Vocalist was dead center, lt & rt is pillar to pillar, but didn't extend pass the pillars. the highs were silky smooth. and overall was very stable, tonally was very good from midbass and up.
-Trk#4 (Hold-on) - Once again the vocalist was dead center, and the soundstage were very stable.
-Trk#8 (Spanish Grease) - The bass was dead upfront, with the bass attack from the back of the stock center spr grill located.
-Trk#11 (Never thought I would) - same as trk 8, but higher in position.
-Trk#14 (You look good to me) - sounded quite musical , but in a small presentation.
Conclusion: Overall..... it was quite stable in a sense that where the position of the instruments are placed. and the highs was smooth, detail and airy. bass attacks were tight with no overhang. I find from mid and up communicates better in a musical way then from the midbass and down tho.
To compare what I heard from Phil's car to the Audison amp VRx-4 I bench test in the soundroom. I would say the Focal amp are better tonally, more detail and dynamic contrast was much better. but could that be coming from the Focal Be or the Z-1? maybe.....
