this is in an 88 jetta:

right now the sub is facing towards the back seat, about 3 inches away right in the middle where the arm rest is

the bass is ok but not as loud as when i had it in both my gen 3 integras

weird thing though is when the music is on and the trunk it open the bass get ALOT deeper, and i mean alot deeper, like it was in my integras

why is this?? should i rotate the sub around so it is facing into the trunk?

the sub is a rockford 12" in a non ported box.....

thanks guys

take the sub, turn it around and place it within a foot of the rear end of the trunk.

You've got cancellation my friend, cancellation. If you were to do a freq sweep with a term-lab or an RTA you will see big peaks and valleys in your sub-woofer output.

move the box around till the freq response is smooth and it will sound much better and hit harder at most frequencies.

For bass competition you want to find a single hot frequency it can cancel at other frequencies, you wont care.

I don't know what your problem is, but I'll bet it's hard to pronounce.

Make sure your mic is in the same position as your head. The cancelation will not be everywhere.

ok thanks guys

i'm not doing this for competition, this is just my regular car

i don't want to place the sub so it sits right in the middle of my trunk, i'll try turning it around and see what that does

any more tips? adjust freq or any thing like that?

You cant use EQ to fix a cancellation and you cant EQ a crossover point worth beans so the first solution is to move the woofer till it sounds good, then where it sounds best. Remember there 6 different directions (up, down, fwd, back, left, right) to point the woofer and many locations in that big azz trunk.

If you have an expensive HU with flexible crossover points this can help but I think you probably have a simple setup.

That's one of the good things about a non-permament enclosure (vs. say a custom fibreglass setup) - you can move it around and find the best location to suit your tastes. That's what I do, as well as with tweeters before I fully mount them.
Generally, I find sealed trunk enclosures sound 'good' facing the rear of the vehicle.

I think I lost some output when I faced the sub to the back vs. when I had it at the back of the trunk facing the front.
This was totally in reverse for my other setup with ported box.

it's all about trying it.

when i had this setup in my integras the sub was facing back so i will try that first

i don't know what you would call a "simple" setup but i have a 4 channel amp for the front and rear speakers, fronts are components rear are coax, i guess that's pretty simple

the HU i have the the new alpine CDA-9883
