The new trend in amplifiers will be to put big power in small footprint amps.So far the most probable route to do so(as Alpine just did) is to from A/B type to `D`class amplification witch is verry eficient compared to A/B. Requires less cooling etc... and yields good power. One of the downsides on amps that will power components is usually the dampening factor witch for technical reasons is usually lower in D class amps than a good A/B. I have always put a priority on the dampening factor (especially in home audio) as it is the ability of a given amp to control your drivers. The higher the number, the better the control. About a decade ago, BLADE,a Canadian car audio amp company designed the BASH technologie for their higher end amps. I remember running two 10 inch subs verry nicely with an amp the size of two cigarettes packs. All day long! Since the BASH tech has been transfered to home sub-woofers and used by many companies.

damping factor is over-rated. although it is a nice number to look at. and sure bigger seems better. but actually, theres a formula for calculations, and here's the jist of the table

2000 0.004 0.926 0.707 0.04

1000 0.008 0.926 0.708 0.04

500 0.016 0.927 0.708 0.04

200 0.04 0.931 0.71 0.04

100 0.08 0.936 0.714 0.04

the key notes are the first and last column. the first being the damping factor, and the last being the decay time in seconds.

so in practice. a damping of 2000 compared to a damping of 100....has no audible effect on the music (to the human ear).

and the higher the resistance, the better damping, and also the higher the hz, the better damped at high hz.....

iunno, it makes sense to me

i kinda summed up the article to how i understand it...heres the link if you want a quick read

In real life, anything over 25 damping factor in final load is probably inaudible, and I cant hear any difference. Now damping factor of 12.5 is a disaster. Formula is, that if you half the ohm load, you half the damping factor. eg If your amp has damping factor of 50 at 4 ohms, it is 25 at 2 ohms, and still sounds great, but at 1 ohm it is 12.5, and sounds very muddy. My experience...
Bottom line - look for an amp, which will give you damping factor of at least 25 in your set up, and you will be fine. BTW, this theory is also supported by science. Google it if you wish...
