Anybody run these? Just wondering what they compare to on the SQ circuit...

Hey just talked to DD today and asked if u have a 9500 with composite cone if there was any real differance and they said nope, 9100 only comes with 4ohm voice coils. So the only real differance rms watts....

.....and completely different suspensions, completely different motors, the fact that the 9100s have great SQ and the 9500s really don't sound that great.....

I have 2 9515s and 1 9115, and they are COMPLETELY different in terms of SQ and SPL. Who on earth did you talk to at DD? The guy who sweeps the floors??? Even with soft spiders in the 9500 it isn't even close in terms of SQ.

I only had my 9115 in my car for a few months before taking it out for the winter (needed the room), but in terms of accuracy it's quite comparable IMO to my old 12W6s. Very smooth if tuned low, but a bit....sterile in terms of tonality. But that may very well be the box I had it in.

Ohhh guess i touched a nerv, well just talked to Cass from DD again today because i want to get my 9500 reconed with composite cones for SQ and he told me again that there is no major differance if i was to get the 4ohm coils the suspension would be the same as they both would be composite and in the motor the main differance is there are less cooling vents in 9100, So lastley if u wanna confirm ask for the night janitor Cass.

The suspension on my 9515s is 5x as stiff as my 9115. Soft-spidered 95g recones are still stiffer than a 91, but IMO don't hold a candle to the 91 in terms of SQ; they're still peaky as hell.

If you want to recone a 9500 to SQ 9100 softparts, go for it. Hell, if I had a spair 9500 motor laying around and wanted SQ I'd give it a try. I'd be curious to see how peaky it is. Maybe you'll get lucky and it will sound like a 91.

But next time you talk to Cass, ask him to to explain how the peaky brutality of a 9500 motor will perform the same as the linear 9100 motor with the same softparts. I just don't see it happening. Did they just make them different to save on ferrite? Maybe a calculated fluke that you'll end up with the same BL curves as the 9100 in the end?

I'm not sure if you confused Cass or if Cass confused you, but there is some misunderstanding there.

For starters, the 9500 series has a substantially more compliant suspension (much stiffer) and a lot more BL, whereas the 9100 series suspension is softer and the motor offers more BL linearity. The most obvious difference is the motor: where the 9500 series is a LGLC overhung driver (like a lot of their drivers, although I guess the long part depends on whose opinion you value), the 9100 series is an underhung driver (see the short magnetic stack and tall top plate?). Where the 9500 series has a lot more output, the 9100 sounds substantially better.

I have heard both in person and not only are they very different from an engineering standpoint, they sound totally different.

For the original poster, the 9100 series is the best DD driver I have heard. But there are a number of other drivers I would use instead. Mind you, if this is for competition, you can win with Pyle drivers if well integrated.
