I would like a few first person opinions (this would be a product you have heard) on THE BEST SQ in a 6 or 7 inch midbass cost is not a big issue but I am frugal none the less. I need to add a little funk to my floorboard and my short list (at this time is Dynaudio MW162, Scan Speak, and whatever Focal Jason Gay had in his kick). I am trying to blend in with the Memphis SQ15 comp set which is surprisingly detailed (almost clinical) and accurate. I plan on sending in a goodly amount of quality amplification ( I may build a custom passive or go active or some mix of the two). The primary area of concern is 80 to 250 Hz (bass authority, kick drum, synth, stand up bass).

I did a comparison last night with a bunch of likely drivers and the order of players in my closet FOR THIS APPLICATION: Dynaudio mw170, DLS ultimate (not enough LF extension) tied with Rockford 4x6 (yup it was good!), Memphis 5x7, McIntosh ms471 (too slow)

If you're reffering to Jason's Grand Prix....him and I built that together in about 2 months, and it had mid bass in the doors....the kicks were Utopia 165W's and were upgraded to Audiom 6W's.

The midbass was a 5WS in a sealed door that was powered by a Kicker ZR120 and later on by an Audison VRX 6 channel.

And yes, it was definatly quite impressive for 2 5" midbass, very accurate and played VERY low, low enough infact that you almost couldn't tell when he shut off the subs.

As for a 6" midbass, I like Kicker's 6" midbass, can't remember what the model is, but it's quite nice....I believe the Kicker Resolution line had a midbass that was quite nice as well.

I had Kicker RS and midbass was terrible. No control, did not like to play low, sound was narrow. I put in CDT M6, and never looked back.

I tested about half a dozen woofers before I choose the Adire Extremis. But by the looks of things we have different criteria to go by. I needed (more like wanted) a mid that could play well at very low frequencies (35Hz and up). The Extremis did the best job of that for me. You dont seem to need the real low stuff. So from my experience and testing I would suggest you go out and listen to a set of the Old JBL 8" 2115J (not sure if I got the exact model right). Simply put, it has got to be the fastest midbass woofer I've ever heard. Rip you shirt off midbass if you know what I mean. But it will require a cabinet and will not play low frequencies at high volumes. This is the same midbass woofer found in Mark Eldridge's truck and Elma gates Truck. Both had awsome midbass. These woofers should be easy to find on e-bay, and you can still get re-cones for them. At 80Hz and up, your going to find it hard to beat this mid.

The best midbass I have heard in-car is a tie for me. One was the B&W 7" driver out of a set of DM602 speakers. The other was the old RF Audiophile RFA64 6.5" midbass. I just scored a mint pair of these off ebay too.

Both of these drivers can play really low and IMO aren't too chesty like a woofer forced into midbass duty. Both setups I heard them in were 3way front end playing from about 50-250/300 ish.

Be careful what you wish for...

I just spent the day looking for the JBL 2155j .. obsolete and its replacement ne8t-h is long in the tooth too. But yeah Almas truck was spectacular especially in the bass through to the midrange. The drivers are nearly full range up to 15k... but they do want volume too and 8s are a challenge in kicks without giving them 40 liters... we shall see.

hmmm B&W... nice mids there... may have to go out and tear up a set of Bowers and Wilkens

The Macrom EXT.W6 is a killer midbass...

Money no object? Get a Rohacell driver out of a B&W 803D. Then you'll have a killer driver.

BTW - DM602 is not made anymore (I'm a B&W dealer). There is no more "big mid" bookshelf...

I wouldn't use the word obsolete. Old maybe. Not much has changed in speaker technology in 20 years. Not the basics any way. But yes you would need to do some work to your car to get the JBL's to work properly. You did say cost no objuect though, right?

Did you hear the B&W mids in Earl Zauserman (SP) Old BMW. If so, I rember listening to his car back in 1998 (maybe 97??). Nice impact in that car for sure. I would say his midbass sounded very "technical". Very accurate for sure. Way too much money though.

You might want to put the Scan Rev 7" (Model 4531 I believe) on your list too. Great speaker. I would have put it in my personal car instead of the Extremis if it's motor was smaller. Plays low, take lots of power and has great attack and decay. Matt Roberts is using these in his truck (one of the best sound car systems around).

I meant obsolete as in no longer made... replaced by another model, I like lots of old stuff better than new stuff.

Matts truck is a sweet ride, it looks good and sounds good. He has done a great job of making the system not have any identifiable sonic traits so it sounds neutral, fast, musical, detailed etc not too many flaws really. Several guys are running scans they ARE some of the lowest if not the lowest distortion drivers made, yet they often have a warm rich (pleasant) sound to them (Sonus Faber).

I will probably do a Buwalda Hybrids build next time around so that will be interesting too, they have a 6 and 8 in their lineup
