| Hi,
I really value SQ in my car. My setup consists of the following:
Clarion DRZ 9255
Butler Tube Driver Bi-amped to my Focal K2P's (75 watts per component)
JL 10W7 in the Pro Wedge box
JL Audio 500/1 for the sub.
CDT Image enhancement tweeters (these run from 5Khz on up as my Focal components are in kicks, low in the car).
My biggest issue is the sub...I hate it. This install is in a 2005 Passat and the big issue is that the rear seat has a metal plate that runs the entire back side of the seat. This in essence keeps about 50% of the sub output in the trunk.
My question.....what can I do to bring the sub into the car? Can i use the rear door speaker locations to house a couple of 8 inch drivers and then lose the trunk sub all together? Any other options? i really love the Focal components, but only down to around 80hz...anything lower gets a bit muddy to me.
Thanks,
Tim
PS....money is not the issue if I can get good tight and fast bass. i would even give up some of the lower extension stuff. |

| Anything stopping you from opening up the rear deck to vent the bass into the cabin? First step would be to remove any rear stock speakers if there are any. If you wanted to get fancy, you could hang a custom enclosure from the rear deck and provide a 10" opening in the deck with the sub directly below to vent it into the interior. Or even mount the 10 right into the deck, with an enclosure below it. The metal of the rear deck would have to be reinforced with min. 3/4" MDF if not 1" or a metal baffle to make it good and rigid though. Make a nicely covered trim panel to cover the rear deck to finish it off. Lots are done that way to get sound into the cabin.

| I have an '04 jetta, same problem, bullet proof rear seats were taking alot of output away from my 2 10's. I'm an SQ guy also, so i got fed up, and built an enclosure that hangs off the rear deck. I re-inforced the rear deck with 1 1/4" MDF. Its a fiberglass box, with metal re-bar type supports going through it. I'm not done the install as yet, but hopefully it yields some good results. I have heard that the subs load better and project bass upfront a little better with subs firing off the back deck.
FOZZZ has a set of Alpine 12's on the rear deck of his car. He has them in a free-air setup. |

| Thanks guys. I was hoping to be able to drop in something like a 5 inch Focal sub into the rear doors but it doesn't seem like that is being suggested. I have tried to come up with ways to open up the back, but other than dropping the seat, nothing else seems to make sense. I don't like the road noise that comes with leaving the seat down (plus its hard when you have kids).
I'd love to see pictures of what you are doing in the 04 Jetta.

| i would look to see if you have the room for kickpods with two focal 13kw in each side (the Be line of the 5" sub )

| why i call them sub-mids is thay do not go low low low and they do not do mid mid mid so there 1/2 way and you need a set of 2 in the same box placemint to get what i like

| I would very much like a solution that allows me to cut off my 6.5 inch K2P's at 100hz, then have a small sub driver (or two) to run from 100hz down to around 40hz (I don't have to go below). I have JM Lab home speakers that only go down to 40hz and they slam real good!
Anyone care to speculate on what either the JL 6W0's or Focal 5" would sound like in my rear doors? I was out cleaning the car today and I cannot imagine anyplace to put them in the front section of the car. There just ain't room up there.
Thanks |
