| I was looking at buying the 165W3's for my front stage. Focal has the set rated @ 100w RMS. 100W seems a little weak for 3 speakers. I was looking around the Focal site but couldn't find any info if the set was bi-ampable. Any one have info on these?
Thanks |

| I know the 165W's are definitely biampable but Im not sure on the 3 way set. I am trying to find that out myself. If not Im seeing if the 6W1(the 6.5" thats in the 165W3 set) comes seperate so I can do the 136W set with a pair of 6W1s for midbass. |

| Yes I have info on these.
No the passive X.O. does not directly allow bi-amping.
Yes the 165W3 kit can handle more than 100 watts. I've pushed my Audison VRx2.400 to limit itself (clipping protection) with the 165W3 kit connected and nothing happened. D-Mac has bench tested a VRx2.400 to put out around 270 watts per channel.
I am currently actively crossing over my Utopia kit an Audio Control DQX. Amplification as follows.
Tweeter - 2 channels of Arc Audio XXK 4150
4" Midrange - Audison VRx2.400
6.5" Midbass - 2 channels of Arc Audio XXK 4150
Considering the efficiency of each driver, it's a well balanced amplification set up.
If you are serious about a the Utopia 3 way kit, the quality of the install should be at the top of your list. I've made my kit sound like crap, and lately it's been sounding beautiful because of a better install.

| I did that set in a Mazda we ran each pair of drivers off a Rockford 451s which is rated at about 130x2. so we had a total of 780 watts RMS to the entire set |

| Yes the 6W1 midbass is available as just a driver. Contact your local dealer or rep and they can get them for you. |

| PEI on your DQX for the midbass did you setup your xover point then use the subsonic filter for the bottom end of it?
Reason I ask is because Im doing the 136W set with its passive running off VRx 2.250.2 and hopefully a pair of 6W1's off another audison but I was planning on the 6XS for the xover as it has the midbass outputs on it [ May 19, 2004, 09:37 AM: Message edited by: MDXMan ] |

| ^^^Yes I did. On newer DQXs, the sub sonic filter is adjustable up to 125hz. I've got mine set at 55hz right now. |

| If you are planning on running an EQ as well, it would be better to run a DQX. Saves some cables, and it would be one pair less op-amps to pass the signal through. |

| I am running an EQ but my choice was the DQS as Im not going to have an extra amp to run the tweets to go full active.
btw the system is still in design stage [ May 19, 2004, 09:52 AM: Message edited by: MDXMan ] |

| The DQX can also be used as a 2 way. I did that myself for a while. Currently, the midrange to tweeter x.O. point can be adjusted from 1khz up to 8khz. After 8khz there is a setting called OFF which eliminates the lowpass filter on the midrange output.
...and it's good to hear people planning a system...kind of rare these days. [ May 19, 2004, 09:58 AM: Message edited by: PEI330Ci ] |
