Jordy -- here is the VERY basic description of passive vs. active crossovers

An active crossover is electronic -- it usely goes between the deck and amp and can cost anywhere from $30 - $3000. Decks can also have active crossovers.

A passive crossover uses capacitors, coils and (in some applications) resistors to vary the frequency crossed over. Passive crossovers are usually between the amplifier and the speaker (or woofer).

For the most part -- active crossovers are used by people for subwoofers (usually the amp xover) and passives are used on speakers (ie adding a cap before a coax or the passive xovers that come with many components).

--- are these descriptions okay, or have I missed your point entirely?

I used to use a Coustic XM3E xover and Coustic Design Reference Amp and components -- they were good at the time -- I have not seen any new Coustic gear in years so I cannot give an accurate view as to their quality now.

Ok.. so I checked on sounddomain and none of the amps seem to fit what I'm looking for.

inexpensive, 18db slope, and 150-300w @ 8Ohms.. any other ideas?

It may be too expensive... but the new Rockford Power Series T500.2 has a 24 db xover and punches out (pun intended) @ 1100 watts into 1ohm.
