The 9255 streets for around $1400... The 955 is around $700

Cartrek - I have to agree with Defro on that.. I've reviewed both products, and I was impressed with the Alpine Type-R woofers in all regards - more-so than the W3 by a long shot. Maybe there is something wrong with one of them?

The 12's were dual 4 ohm. ummm don't have the exact size in front of me, but in the order of 2 ft each, tuned to around 30. 12 1/2 sq" slot ports around 17" long. seperate enclosures. was a BIG box!
the customer had an MRD 300 driving each one at 2 ohms, off an Alpine head.
for the a/b i wired em parallel/series, for a 4 ohm load...they were used, hence already broken in.
The W3 is a dual 2 ohm wired series, in a 1.1 ft box tuned to 29.
It's not like the R's were in a crap box... I built it the best i could.
Put it on the floor of the showroom, and hooked it up to the switcher. The 12's did go a bit lower, but overall output was noticably less.
Should have been running on close to the same power (I'm using a Fusion 9001D amp)as they are both a 4 ohm load.
I'm sure the pair of 12's can handle more, and ultimately do a bit better, but in a straight A/B switch, without touching the volume, the 10 had more sound, and All my single 12's outplayed em.
Bottome line IMO the type R's are a pretty expensive way to go to get a lot of bass.
Didn't perform in the car either as well as a lot of single 12's I do with a few hundred watts!
The first thing the customer did was turn up the bass to try to get more out of em....course everything else distorted like crazy. The gains on the amps were already maxed, and the Alpine's sub out at 15.

Dave: I checked both subs, and all coils are ok (at rest anyways).
They sounded good... went very low, and clean...don't get me wrong....they just seemed to be pigs for power. I'm sure with a kilo and a half of juice, they'd be great, but dB/dollar ..uh uh
This is not the first time I've played with em either. Maybe I've got the wrong specs (from the Alpine website)

If they went lower, then more likely they are less efficient - a pretty common trade-off.

Interesting comparison though - sounds reasonably valid.

As they say, whay happens, happens.

I ended up going with a 9833 which I got for a good price, the money I saved is going towards a good set of speakers and amp.
