Hey, i bought some hertz esk 165s for my ranger since my actual speaker setup in the front was 6x8, i thought i could makem fit. Im having alot of trouble matchin them up in there.... well id definatly have to cut some door and shit, but like, its a lot more work than i thought... since the woofers holes dont line up with the doors holes.... but the outside mounting edges of the woofer cover half of the holes, so i cant even use the factory mounting at all. What can i do to get them in there? Or would it be much more worth my time to go take them back, get 5 1/4s, make up a new lazercut mounting bracket, and just boltem right in? Im jsut wondering how much of my midbass i would be loosing doing that?? Would it be worth the work to get the 6 1/2s in is what im really asking.... and if so, how should i do it?

Any help appreciated!

its worth it for sure!! you will need to make a MDF baffle in order to mount them, any reputable install shop can whip you up a quick set for 20$. or just buy them on ebay, I guess.

First of all, what is it and how does it work? I dont mind enlarging the wholes in the door to make it fit, but how does the mounting work?? The woofer covers the holes that i need to mount it to!

MDF = medium density fiberboard. By making a baffle out of it, you can move the woofer further out from the door, which hopefully will give you enough depth and diameter to mount the woofer. One thing to note is the door panel might hit the baffle if it is too thick so they need to be built carefully. I found an example here.

Well i am going to guess that i would need to mount the baffle securely to the door.... and the holes that i would be mounting it to, will be covered by the new 6 1/2 woofer going in. Thats my problem. If it was a slight bit smaller than my door, then i wouldnt have any problems installing them myself here.

You can use self tapping screws or a drill bit & make new holes or if you want to use the old holes just mount the mdf ring first and then the speaker on the mdf.

For the second option, the speaker would then sit ontop of the bolts. Unless your sayin counter bore that stuff.

And How well to self tappers stay in super thin sheet metal?
