Hey guys, thought I'd see if anyone has encountered this problem, and what they came up with...

As the title states it's a yota land cruiser; the kicker is that it's from japan, thus a 24 volt system. There's 2 12 volt batteries under the hood, wired in series, but the Alt. puts out 24V (not entirely 100% on this though). I have looked around for 24V-->12v converters but finding one that will put out the amps required for the system is proving difficult, that is without spending 400-600 dollars on that unit.

There is a 24v to 12v converter in the car already, for the cheap aftermarket HU that's in there, but nothing that will prove useful in the upgrade, aside from running the pending alarm install...

would it be better to get a 24v to 12v converter that can put out the amps required, or get a smaller version, and run the system off an isolated battery in the back? or even to isolate the audio system from the rest of the electrical system to one of the batteries under the hood, and use that?

Looking to run about 1kw to 1500w system, nothing major, just a good daily system.

thanks guys, Mark

EDIT: I have found that I might be able to connect all the 12v gear to the battery that is grounded to the chasis, and as long as I don't hook anything into the other battery I will be fine, but to me I would assume the other battery wired in series to produce the 24volt system, would cause problem????

thanks again guys,

Mark

I use Land Cruisers here at work...got lots of em.

Anyway, for our 24 volt vehicles we connect all the coms equipment (GPS, Sat phone, VHF, SSB, 40 Mhz, vehicle tracking) to a single 12 batt. Yes, the one with the ground on it.

Good luck, and post some pictures. Land Cruisers are kind of rare in North America...unless you buy the Lexus 470...which is basically a full size Land Cruiser overseas.
