This is probably the the single lamest install ever discussed on this site, but any help that any of you could offer me would be greatly appreciated.

I'm putting in an el cheapo sony deck because my stock deck stopped working. My car is a 2000 Mazda Protege and the deck is a Sony CDX-GT110.

This is what I did:

1. pulled out and disconnected the stock deck
2. connected the ground for the new deck to the ground wire from the car
3. connected the wires from the new deck to the corresponding, colour-coded wires on the wiring harness I bought (and quintuple checked that the colours were correct
4. plugged in the wiring harness and connected the radio wire to the new deck

This is the problem:

When I turn on the car, I get a loud buzzing from my right rear speaker for about 2-3 seconds, and then the display on the deck says "FAILURE" (ouch). After that, everything works fine, except I have no sound from the right-rear speaker (I confirmed this with balance/fading). Then, when I turn off the car, I get the buzzing again for 2-3 seconds.

I looked in the manual for the deck, and the "FAILURE" message means that one or more speakers is connected incorrectly. I checked the wires for the right rear speaker again and everything looked hunky dory. So, I thought I'd switch them around, so that the positive wire coming from the deck hooked to the negative wire coming from the wiring harness and vice versa. Alas, when I did this and turned on the stereo, I was met with the same ego-crushing message: "FAILURE."

So: does anyone have any idea what could possibly be wrong? Or possibly any ideas on steps I could take to diagnose the problem? Again, any help would be sincerely appreciated.

test the speaker/deck in another vehicle or take them out and power up to the battery terminals and directly connect the deck harness to the speaker

Reinstall the factory radio, if there is no issue there, you either have a bad cd player or a misconnected wire. Try disconnecting both of those suspect wires and see if failure still lights up or not.
