I want to install one of these in my car: Mini 99.9VDC Blue Digital Panel Meter Voltmeter Voltage - (eBay.ca item 200231132572 end time 19-Jun-08 00:35:51 EDT)

Given wiring diagram:

So, can I just use a 5V voltage regulator to give it the 5V, like this: 5V Regulator at Source/RS

(Of course the meter will fail if the car's voltage drops below 5V, but then I'd be screwed anyways!)

And that one only requires the voltage source which it's measuring? I guess it has a regulator built in...

To clarify my question; will that 5V regulator work to provide the power to the meter, while it measure's the car's running voltage?

Also, I really like this one since it will be easy to flush mount cleanly into a dash panel I intend to mount on.

Look at the regulators max current output. If that is greater then the amount that the Volt meter needs then your good.

Looking at that regulator it out puts 1A. It also states it may need a heat sink. (it most likely will in your situation.)
With that in mind I say it -should- power that display. However that auction does not list how much current that display uses, so I cant be sure.

Thanks, I'll bench test it first and see what kind of heat it generates.

guy, that display calls for -5 volts on one lead and +5 volts on the other... for a difference of 10 volts...

just hook it up to 12v power and it will work...
