I also want too keep the use of the rear Speakers..

I don't know what kind of horror stories you have heard but puting a high level adapter in a car is the easiest thing you will ever do. Buy a good stinger high level adapter or one that has gain controls, you should al;ways use your rear speakers to conect to. If you can't find them behind the dash just go directly to the rear speaker's and always ground your adapter. If you look at the high level and it looks to easy...... well it is

Many HU manaufacturers have steering wheel control adapters that will allow you to retain your steering wheel controls with an aftermarket deck.

Alpine for one.

If you want to assure that you have the best sound that your stock deck can make, look at using the Audio Control LC-6 or the JL Audio "Cleansweep" instead of a normal line level converter.

peripheral also makes a piece for your steering wheel controls but it retails for around $189
